The Introduction

Brief discription of Shar-pei, the hippo head dog

The name Shar-pei itself literally means "sand-skin", but translated more loosely as "rough sandy coat" or "sand-paper-like coat" . In the 1970's, only 48 dogs were known to exist. Matgo Law appealed to the American people to help save this wonderful dog. At that time, the Guiness Book of World Records listed the Chinese Shar-pei as the rarest dog in the world. In the early 1990's, the American Kennel Club accepted the Shar-pei and placed them in the nonsporting class. The history of the Chinese Shar-pei in modern times is incomplete. However, it is known that following the establishment of the People's Republic of China as a communist nation, dogs were considered a luxury that took food away from humans. Taxes on pets essentially eliminated the dog population in China. No dogs were seen in the cities and few remained in the countryside. During this time, a few breeders in the British colonies acquired a few Sharpei. Breeders Matgo Law and C.M. Chung began a campain to save the breed with a plea for help in dog magazines.

What is the difference between Toy, Mini, Standard, and Colossal?

Shar-peiToys measure 14" and under. They are about the size of a cocker spaniel. Minis are 14"-17". They are about the size of a boxer. Standards measure 17"-22". Colossals measure 22" and above. There is no difference regarding health and longevity. However, Minis and Toys do tend to keep their wrinkles and puppy-like playfulness into adulthood, more so than their larger counterparts!
